The dimensions on this stand are partially flexible. The 18 x 36" top are preferred dimensions. I place a standard carpet on top for the surface. However, a "padded pool table top surface" could be built onto the top ideally. The 42" high measurement is critical from the standing position to the top surface. The 10" stand which the podium rests on can be changed to different sizes and is simply a preference. The 12" shelf space is a flexible but desired option. I hide my props in this "open" shelf so they are not seen by the audience.
